Auburn has been ahead of the curve on recycling since 1987 — the first city in Alabama to start curbside recycling. That matters to us. When we haul away junk, debris, or demolition waste, we don't just dump everything in the same pile. We sort what can be recycled and make sure it gets there. If you've got materials you want kept out of the landfill — scrap metal, clean wood, cardboard and paper from a cleanout, certain plastics — we can haul them and handle responsible disposal.

What We Can Recycle Haul

Not everything we pick up is recyclable, and we won't tell you otherwise. But for jobs where recyclable materials make up a meaningful portion of the load, we sort and route them properly. Here's what we can typically handle:

• Scrap metal — old appliances, metal fencing, pipes, ductwork, structural metal, and aluminum from renovation or demolition projects. Auburn's general recycling materials are transported to Waste Recycling, Inc. in Opelika and Pratt Recycling in Columbus, GA.
• Clean wood waste — untreated lumber, pallets, and clean wood scraps from construction projects that can be processed rather than landfilled.
• Cardboard and paper — from property cleanouts, moving jobs, or commercial spaces clearing out storage areas.
• Certain plastics — clean, non-contaminated plastic materials that meet recycling facility requirements.
• Tree and organic debris — wood chips, brush, and organic material from tree work that can be composted or mulched rather than dumped.

Auburn's Recycling Infrastructure

Auburn has solid recycling infrastructure for a city its size. The City of Auburn's Recycling Drop-Off Center is currently temporarily located at 640 Mary Brooks Drive while the Boykin Donahue Campus project is under construction — it's open 24 hours a day, year-round. Once construction wraps up in fall 2026 it'll move to its permanent location on North Donahue Drive.

For city residential customers, recycling is collected curbside on the same day as garbage pickup using single-stream collection — no sorting required. But curbside recycling only covers certain materials and doesn't help with large volumes of recyclable material from cleanouts, renovations, or property projects. That's where our recycle haul service comes in.

What We Can't Recycle

We want to be straight with you about what's recyclable and what isn't. A lot of junk removal companies say they "prioritize recycling" without being specific about what that actually means. Here's what we can't take to recycling facilities:

• Hazardous materials — paints, chemicals, solvents, asbestos, and similar materials require specialized disposal and can't go to standard recycling facilities.
• Treated or painted wood — pressure-treated lumber, painted wood, and composite decking can't be recycled the same way clean wood can.
• Mixed or contaminated materials — materials that are heavily mixed with non-recyclables or contaminated with chemicals, food waste, or hazardous substances.
• Electronics and e-waste — TVs, computers, and electronics require specialized e-waste handling. The City of Auburn accepts computer equipment by appointment — call Environmental Services at (334) 501-3080.
